We had fun playing on the 100's chart! We put numbers on the chart and we added numbers and we subtracted numbers. (Jake) We made lines and we subtracted and we added. (Cami) There was a magic trick and if you take for example 65 and you add 10 it would be 75. You just go down one. (Katherine)
They have lots of colors that you can choose from to highlight what your numbers are. (Megan) If you minus ten then you just go up one. (Luke) You can go diagonal too. We noticed that you go diagonal when you add 11. (George)

Our guest reader wanted to read a book about broken bones since her first grader recently broke his arm. However she could not find any books in the library. SO - she decided to write her own!! She wrote a book based on fact, but she turned it into a really cool fictional story about a boy whose cast gives him super powers. This is a special book to the 1D Learning Lions because every single student is a character in this book. We are happy that this book is now part of our classroom library :-)

We learned about the layers of a cast and we heard about cutting off the cast. We are glad there are no more casts in 1D!

We have been learning about grocery stores. We know that grocery stores have different departments. Kroger Marketplace even has a furniture department! We played Name 5 - a category game. Each student took a turn naming an item that would be in a grocery store, then they had to identify the department in which that item could be found.

We had our very first guest reader this week. Our guest reader shared The Giving Tree. Mrs. B. told us that this was one of her favorite stories when she was a little girl. She also told us that she reads lots of books about interior decorating for her job. We found out that she likes to read magazines - and many 1D Learning Lions had a connection with her - we like magazines too!

Global Read Aloud Project and Skyping

We are so excited! We have been waiting for September 19th - the official start date of the Global Read Aloud Project. Beginning on Monday our class, along with students from around the world, will start to read Flat Stanley. We have agreed to read a certain number of chapters each week and we will discuss these chapters via skype and Edmodo with other participating students. We are specifically partnering with Mrs. Pamela-Faith Jackson's first grade class in Atlanta, Georgia. Her school is part of the Fulton County School District, and we had the opportunity to meet her and her students via a skype call on Friday. We prepared questions to ask the Atlanta first graders and we answered their questions. The Columbus Academy first graders were interested to learn that our partner school has kids in grades k-5, but no older students. The Georgia students thought we were lucky to have a school football team and to get to go to pep rallies with our third grade buddies. They told us that they have a professional football team - The Atlanta Falcons, but no school team. When asked if any of the 1D kids play football or lead cheers, the 1D students promptly started chanting, "V-I-K-E-S! Let's go Vikes!" The Atlanta First Graders sang a Days of the Week song and told us that they have been in school for 23 days. We told them we had only been in school for 15, and both classes quickly did a math problem to figure out how many more days the Georgia kids have been in school than the CA Kids.

This week will create flat dolls to send electronically to our friends in Georgia and they will send us some flat dolls in return. We hope to learn more about kids around the world by participating in a variety of global projects this year!

Sorting cards by word families

This week we added the second component of Daily 5 - WORD WORK. We used the iPads to spell our Monster Words with magnetic letters. The 1D Learning Lions loved the refrigerator magnet app! We also sorted word cards into word families. For the next few weeks our phonics lessons will focus on word endings ~ ap, ip, op, ep, up, in, an, on, en, un, etc. The students looked at each word card to determine which word family would be the right fit (op- pop, slop, cop, ip - slip, tip, rip, etc.). In addition to developing spelling skills, this word work activity also encourages students to pay attention to the middle vowel sound when reading.

Each day a new student is chosen to be the Teacher's Assistant. The TA reads the morning message, takes attendance to the office, returns books to the library, passes papers, records tallies and compliments, and completes any other job that is necessary on a given day. The assistants have even been adding books to our Shelfari shelf of read alouds (look for our shelf on the right side of this blog).

*If you haven't completed the emergency medical authorization and health history forms online, or sent in your child's swimsuit, goggles (if you want!), P.E. shoes, art smock, or an extra set of clothes

please remember to do so!

*It sometimes gets chilly in our classroom, so you may wish to send a dress code sweatshirt or sweater for your 1D kid to keep at school.

*PLEASE REMEMBER TO LABEL ALL CLOTHES with your child's name. Believe it or not, we even ask that you write your child's name inside each of the shoes. We often have "sock foot" time when the children have their shoes off, and dress code shoes are easy to confuse.
*Continue to look at the blog and Twitter for the most up to date information regarding our classroom.

* Reading homework will begin on Tuesday, September 6th and written homework will follow that next week. This will give us the opportunity to discuss homework routines and expectations at Parent’s Night.

First Days in First Grade

We may have had a short two day week, but we managed to fit so much into those days! We are spending lots of time learning first grade routines - unpacking bookbags, reading morning message, beginning the morning warm-up, lining up, eating lunch in the BIG dining hall, going to specials classes, and more.

The 1D Kids are really enjoying morning meeting activities and greetings. They loved playing Pop! on Friday, and they begged to play it again. The teachers promised that we will play Pop! again next week, but we will also be learning many more morning meeting games. We also had fun with the ET greeting ~ the first two students in the circle touch fingers and take turns saying Good Morning (child's name), then the greeting is passed around the circle. This is a wonderful way to begin to learn each other's names - plus it is fun!

We experienced our very first Quiet Ten on the first day of school. During Quiet Ten, all children write as soft music is played in the background. This is part of our Writer's Workshop, and it tends to be a favorite time of the day for students and teachers. Check out the 1D Kids' very first writing piece on the bulletin board across from our classroom. To prepare for this writing activity, we read First Day Jitters. Next we brainstormed some things we were nervous about before the first day of school (Mrs. Simmons was nervous that she would not be able to remember the names of the students in her class!). The students then wrote about their jitter critter and/or the thing they were worried about to start first grade. Since this was our first writing experience in first grade, this writing is unedited and the children used their first grade developmental spelling. As students are exposed to lessons on word families, monster words, writing conventions, handwriting, ideas, etc. our expectations will change throughout the year. For now we just celebrated the fact that every 1D writer produced a writing piece on their very first day of first grade!!

Even with only 4 school days, next week is sure to be a busy week as well. We will begin working in our math books, we will start Phonics lessons, and - best of all - on Tuesday we will meet our Third Grade Buddies. The teachers look forward to seeing parents at Parents' Night on Thursday and we especially look forward to learning more about each of the 1D kids during our Getting To Know You conferences on Friday.

Daily 5

We started Daily 5 on Friday. The 1D teachers LOVE to read, so we were extremely excited to begin Daily 5. Our first piece of Daily 5 is Read to Self. We worked together to create a chart for Read to Self Rules. This is what we came up with: Read silently. Get started right away. Read the whole time. Stay in one place. Work on building stamina. We will review these rules frequently over the next few weeks to make sure that we have a great atmosphere for reading.

Each 1D kid now has his/her own book box. Over the next few weeks we will learn how to choose "just right" books. We also made a chart for 3 Ways to Read a Book ~ we decided that you can Read the words (silently or out loud), Read the pictures, and Retell the story. We will use all three ways of reading during our Daily 5 Literacy time.

We will continue to build on the Daily 5 so that eventually students will be involved in all 5 literacy components - Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, and Listen to Reading. First Day Jitters

Mrs. Simmons and Mrs. Yakscoe LOVE to read and we will read First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg on our very first day. Everyone gets first day jitters - even the teachers. To help all of us feel comfortable on the first day, the 1D kids (and their teachers!) may bring a small jitter critter to the first day of first grade. The jitter critter should be small (beanie baby or Webkinz size) and we will use the jitter critter for some first day activities.

Japan Field Trip

Well....we didn't exactly GO to Japan - but we did enjoy our field trip. We shopped at Hana Gifts and Tensuke Market. The children were careful buyers, and they spent their money wisely. The most popular purchases included fans, miniature beckoning cats, chopsticks, and the special soda with the marble in the bottle. Of course we also enjoyed the yummy lunch at Akai Hana restaurant. Thank you to all chaperones! We could not have done this trip without so many volunteers.

Marmon Valley was the perfect setting for our field trip. The first graders had the opportunity to experience many aspects of pioneer life first hand. The students dipped candles, learned about kitchen tools from the 1800's, made candle holders, and tried some pioneer era tools. It was wet and muddy, but FUN!

Mr. and Mrs. Jeffers came to school to share their knowledge about pioneer antiques.We saw lots of antiques from the time period when pioneers were traveling on the Oregon Trail ~ 1840’s - 1870’s (Some items were even older!) Did you know that the pioneers were fancy? The liked to wear colorful clothing and they added lots of embellishments and designs to everyday tools to add fun and whimsy to daily chores.

Our current literacy theme is Being Afraid. We are reading and discussing books such as Franklin in the Dark, Froggy's Sleepover, The Littles Get Trapped, and The Little Old Lady Who was not Afraid of Anything. Our guided reading stories this week are My Brother is Afraid of Just About Everything and Ira Sleeps Over.

We will make pinecones rolled in soy butter and birdseed, pretzels dipped in honey and seeds, popcorn on a string, cheerios on a string, and bread shapes cut out with cookie cutters. On Monday morning our third grade buddies will join us as we go into the woods to scatter our animal treats.

We were math maniacs this week! During math rotations we played Domino Top-It, built numbers using Base-10 Blocks, explored the geoboards, and used tape measures to measure different body parts.

After making numbers with the blocks, we got to just BUILD :-)

Tooth Traditions

We are studying tooth traditions! We will learn about tooth traditions around the world. Did you know that in some countries instead of a tooth fairy, a little mouse or a fairy rat comes for a lost tooth?! In other places children are expected to throw their tooth from the roof or bury it in the dirt. In certain countries lost teeth are kept by the family and made into charms. We will read lots of books to help us understand the various tooth traditions, but Throw Your Tooth on the Roof by Selby Beeler is a favorite book for this theme!
Beginning in December we will also begin to keep track of lost teeth on our blog. This lost tooth tally will be posted in the upper right hand corner of this blog page.

Pumpkin Math

We enjoyed some pumpkin math this week! Each student cut a piece of yarn to match their prediction about the circumference of the pumpkin. When we checked our predictions, some were too long, some were too short, and only one was just right!

We used unifix cubes and paper clips to measure the height of the pumpkin and the pumpkin stem
